Be Sure it’s the Parachute!
Lk 21:25-28, 34-36

A small private plane was flying with three passengers on board: an old priest, a rich businessman and a boy scout. Suddenly, the engine sputtered and stopped altogether. They all rushed to get their parachutes. They were horrified to realize that there were not enough parachutes for all of them. One of them will be left without one. The pilot took one, saying, “I have a wife and two kids. They need me.” And off he jumped. The businessman, seeing that the boy was holding a parachute, grabbed it away from him, saying,

The WORD Today

Submitted by Ted

Despedida Party for Msgr. Romy Montero

Please join us in giving a rousing send-off to Msgr Romy Montero on Sunday March 17. There will be a concelebrated Mass @ 3:00PM and Reception to follow after the Mass.

After 8 years of continued service as Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry (FPM) and Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Pompei Church, Msgr. Romy Montero is going home to the Philippines for his new parish assignment in San Isidro Labrador Parish, San Jorge, Samar Philippines. Msgr. Romy's last day at Our Lady of Pompei church is March 31. The pending departure of the Msgr. Romy as Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry will have a great impact to the FPM as a whole. We will surely miss him. We are all grateful to Msgr. Romy for his guidance and leadership to make the FPM more vibrant, receptive to the continued improvement of the FPM. Thank you Father Romy!

See you all,
Celi

The pending departure of the Msgr. Romy as Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry will have a great impact to the FPM. Msgr. Romy has taken up the cudgels left behind by the late Fr. Bobby Sison, and has pursued with equal determination and zeal the attainment of the mission of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry. In the past years, there were major steps towards making the pastoral ministry more organized, focused and more responsive to the needs of the people.

Msgr. Romy Montero came to New York on October 27, 2004 accompanied by Bishop Jose Palma, STD to attend the Laksambayan 2004 honoring the late Fr. Bobby Sison. Fr. Bobby was instrumental in helping Msgr. Romy to become priest. He was a scholar of the Seminary Aid Program of the Fr. Bobby Sison Good Samaritan Partnership in Mission. Mr. Armel Francisco was his benefactor.

Msgr. Romy has done pastoral work for more than 16 years in the poorest parishes in the Philippines. It was a major adjustment for him to leave his parish in the Philippines and come to New York. First time abroad and to a big city of New York, culture shock was an understatement. It took for him awhile to adjust to his new home.

Now, after 8 years of continued service to the Filipino community as Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry and Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Pompei Church, Msgr. Romulo Montero is going home to the Philippines. Last August his Bishop, Most Reverend Msgr.Isabelo Abarquez from his home diocese has requested him to take up the responsibility as new Pastor of the San Isidro Labrador Parish, San Jorge, Samar Province in the Calbayog Diocese. In his letter, his Bishop said that Msgr. Romy’s eight years of pastoral experience in the United States would be a great help and will benefit the diocese.

Msgr. Romy’s last day with us at Our Lady of Pompei is March 31. We will surely miss him. We are all grateful to Msgr. Romy for his guidance and leadership to make the FPM more vibrant, receptive to the continued improvement of the FPM.

Thank you Father Romy and we wish you well in your next assignment.

Silver Jubilee Year of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry.

Oscar Aquino, Msgr. Romulo Montero, Fr. Rey Domagas, Fr. Romeo Hontiveros, Fr. Walter Tonelotto, c.s., Fr. George L. Atok, SDB. A reception to follow at the Fr. Demo Hall after the Mass. Ramon and Conchita Laurencio are this year’s Hermano and Hermana Mayores. We are counting on your help and support to make this year’s fiesta in honor of Poon Hesus Nazareno to be a successful one.

There are several milestones that the FPM is celebrating this year – 25th anniversary of the Baclaran sa Village, devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help which was first initiated during the launching of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry on October 26, 1988. The 30th anniversary of the Santo Nino devotion initiated and sponsored by the Santo Nino Prayer Group of New York. Also included is the Memorial of the 10th death anniversary of Fr. Bobby Sison, the founding director of the FPM. Msgr. Romulo Montero, the current FPM director will also celebrate his 25th Sacerdotal Anniversary of Priesthood this year. We will keep you posted on the details of each celebration.

Founder’s Day of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry

Every year the Filipino Pastoral Ministry of Our Lady of Pompei celebrates a Thanksgiving Memorial Mass for Fr. Bobby B. Sison, the FPM Founding Director. The Mass was held on Sunday, November 18 at Our Lady of Pompei church celebrated by Msgr. Romy Montero. The concelebrants were Fr. Romy Hontiveros, and Fr. George L. Atok, SDB, the homilist.

A reception followed after the Mass at the Fr. Demo Hall. Many attended the Mass to pay tribute to our founder and enjoyed the food, and the dancing after the Mass. We are grateful to everyone who brought something to share for the potluck reception especially to Evelyn Gomez, who celebrated her birthday.

On November 20, SLRAA also held a Thanksgiving and Memorial Mass for the late Fr. Bobby Sison at the San Lorenzo Ruiz and Scalabrini Center. Romy Montero, and Fr. George L. Atok, SDB concelebrated the Mass.

The success of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry is a lasting tribute to Fr. Bobby’s pioneering effort to establish a welcoming church for the Filipinos. We celebrate the vision of Fr. Bobby, for all that he did and initiated in his lifetime, and we still continue doing it. What started as a vision has indeed become a reality. The seed which he planted years ago has become a large and fruitful tree. And we are now enjoying the fruits of his labor twenty-four years later. The FPM continues to serve the Filipino community through its programs and activities under the leadership of Fr. Romy Montero, the FPM director.

Thanksgiving Day Vigil Mass and Celebration

The Filipino Pastoral Ministry hosted its annual tradition of Pre-Thanksgiving celebration with the Annual Thanksgiving Vigil Mass and Potluck Dinner on Wednesday November 21, the day before the actual Thanksgiving Day. The celebration started with the Rosary, Novena to Mother of Perpetual Help followed by the Vigil Mass celebrated by Msgr. Romulo Montero, Fr. George L. Atok, SDB, Fr. Romy Hontiveros.

After the Mass, the devotees were invited to a Potluck Thanksgiving dinner held at the Fr. Demo Hall. The buffet table was filled with different Filipino food, desserts and the traditional roasted turkey. Everybody enjoyed the food and drinks. Thank you to all who attended the Mass and also brought their favorite food for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!

Kids Thanksgiving Treat

After the Thanksgiving party at Pompei, the kids went to see the inflated balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The kids and the grown-ups as well were excited to see all the giant balloons parked together near the Museum of Natural History at Central Park West. And the joy ride navigating the closed streets as we got nearer to the venue was a bonus to a worthwhile trip.

FATHER BERNABE BOLASTIG SISON

When we think of hard work, we think of one person who sacrificed his time, energy, effort even his health to the very end in order to see the Filipino Pastoral Ministry running in full force. Father Bobby Sison, recognized the need of Filipino migrants for spiritual guidance, cultural identities, expression of faith through the patron saints of their hometown, legal and social counseling and to experience a different sense of “church home” which they could not express in their respective parishes.

The inception of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry dated back in 1983 when Father Bobby was then an associate priest at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park in Long Island, New York. The Santo Nino Prayer Group of Nassau was first organized to form and redirect devotional orientation among Filipino Families. Later, as Father Bobby was transferred to Our Lady of Pompei Church in Manhattan, he felt motivated to form another Santo Nino Prayer Groups of different boroughs of New York. This difficult mission of overseeing that Filipinos be able to spread the devotion was supplemented by another novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help which is now known as Baclaran sa Village. Fr. Bobby was the first to introduce the Wednesday Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in New York during the official launching of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry on October 26, 1988. Other devotions were followed through Father Bobby’s initiative such the devotion to Our Lady of Manaoag, San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, Poon Hesus Nazareno, St. Bartholomew, the Apostle, Blessed Pedro Calungsod and Madre Ignacia and Madre Francisca del Espiritu Santo.

What was just a devotion extended to different activities validating a program for Filipinos enabling them to convey their cultural practices such as the traditional Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan, Pabasa during Holy Week, Sinulog and Pre-Cana. The Bible studies, Healing Ministry, Choral Singing, Line dancing and the OLP-FPM Running team were among the ongoing growth the Pastoral Ministry has accomplished with the presence of our founder, Father Bobby.

In 1981, Fr. Bobby started the Good Samaritan Foundation, now called Fr. Bobby Sison Good Samaritan Partnership in Mission to help and support seminarians pursue their vocation to become priests. The foundation thus far produced 38 priests now serving in the different parishes in the Philippines and some in the US including Msgr. Romy Montero, currently the Director of the FPM. Fr. Bobby was also one of the prime movers of the early movement to generate and maintain awareness of the then Blessed Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila among the Filipino American residents in America until he became Saint Lorenzo Ruiz.

He was the National Director/Founder of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Association of America, Inc., Good Samaritan Foundation Partnership in Mission, Inc. Filipino Catholic and the Filipino Pastoral Ministry of Our Lady of Pompei Church under the auspices of the Missionaries of St. Charles (Scalabrinian Fathers).

Father Bernabe Bolastig Sison was born on February 21, 1940 in Catbalogan Samar Philippines to Bernabe Arteche Sison and Soledad Bolastig. He was the third in the family of five children. He started at the minor seminary of Saint Vincent de Paul in Calbayog City. Completed his Philosophy and theology at San Carlos Major Seminary in Cebu. Served as diocesan Oeconomus and was a professor at Saint Vincent Seminary in Calbayog. He was ordained on May 30, 1965 in Gandara, Samar Philippines. Father Bobby migrated to the United States on October 5, 1979

His early years after ordination to the priesthood was dedicated to the services of local community in Samar. He visited remote and poor villages in Southern Provinces of the Philippines, preaching the word of God. He was a Parish priest at the Cathedral Parish of Calbayog City. He was school director and pastor at Saint Michaels Church in Samar and Pastor and Team Minister in San Jorge, Samar Philippines.

Here in the United States, he first worked at Maria Regina Church in Seaford, NY in 1979 to 1983. He became Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Massapequa Park, NY in 1983 to 1986 and in 1986 to 1987 he was Associate Pastor at St. Joachim Church in Cedarhurst, NY. From 1987 until the time of his death, Father Bobby was the Pastoral Vicar of Our Lady of Pompei Church in Manhattan.

He was the Spiritual Director of the Katbaloganon Association, USA, Waray Association, Santo Nino Prayer Groups of New York, Infant Jesus Prayer Group of Nassau, Filipino Catholic Group (Filcag) Long Beach, NY, Calbayognon and Friends, USA , Basaynon Group, St. Martin de Porres Healing Ministry of Sr. Josie Dichoso.

Nativity of Our Lady

Happy Birthday Mama Mary! On Sunday September 2, the Samar Group of Pompei under the pastoral program of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry hosted the annual Feast day celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Our Lady of Pompei Church in Manhattan.

Msgr. Romulo Montero, Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry was the main presider of the Eucharistic celebration. There were four concelebrating priests namely: Fr. Romy Hontiveros, Fr. Walter Tonellotto, c.s., Fr. George L. Atok, SDB, and Fr. Philip Lasatin, SDB, visiting from the Philippines,   was the homilist.   The Mass songs were sung by the Filipino Choir of Our Lady of Pompei with the piano accompaniment by Bernard de Leon. Bro. Reynor Santiago and Bro. Francis Pacheco assisted in the Mass together with the altar boys Kevin Villanueva, Adam Rodriguez and Karl Edward Tangonan.

After the Mass, celebration continues at the Fr. Demo Hall, with fellowship, dancing and delicious food courtesy of this year’s Hermana Mayor Cyrene Panganiban. A waray celebration will not be complete without the traditional  dance “Kuratcha”  that added  excitement to the event.

Congratulations to the Hermana Mayor Cyrene Panganiban and to the past hermana mayores of the Samar Group of Pompei, for hosting another successful celebration.

FPM Family Picnic at Sunken Meadow Park

The  members, volunteers and staff of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry led by Msgr. Romy Montero spent a day at the Sunken Meadow Park for some outdoor fun on Saturday August 18. The picnic started early in a rainy, windy, cloudy, cold morning and high tide along the shore.  But as they all said, rain or shine, the FPM Picnic must go on.   The Beach was deserted except for us. We  stayed in the  boardwalk shelter  while  it was raining and waited for the water to subside.

Meanwhile  to keep warm, two teams of kids and adults played touch ball and volley ball when the rain stopped.  Our patience paid off  because  the sun appeared at 12:30 p.m. and all of a sudden the beach and the picnic area were full of people.

The kids discovered the joy of fishing and enjoyed non-stop swimming.  Everybody had an enjoyable fun - filled day.

This year’s picnic was energized with the presence of so many FPM Kids led by Kevin, Adam, Geraldine, Bianca, Kayla, Xavier, Angel, Alyssa, Cassandra,  Lemuel and his two friends, Fatima, Alexa,  Kit and Lei, who were visiting from the Philippines.

Thank you to all who brought the food,  shared-a-ride for those who do not have cars and thank you for coming to make it an enjoyable and memorable fun day for everyone. We missed those who were not able to come but you can all catch up next year.

Labor Day: Picnic and Art Appreciation Outing

About 18 responded to join the Picnic and Art Appreciation Outing organized by the FPM members and the Youth group on Facebook. The meeting place was at Columbus Circle and from there took the A train to 190th station

.

First was a stroll in and around the beautiful Fort Tryon Park that has great views of George Washington Bridge, Hudson River and NJ Palisades. We found a picnic spot to eat our packed lunch and then played some outdoor games.  Everybody had fun in the park. We also planned to visit the Mother Cabrini Shrine but it was closed for the holiday.

After lunch we went to The Cloisters Museum which was a short walk from Fort Tryon Park.  With a little donation, we were able to view the religious art treasures and the beautiful garden of the Cloisters Museum. It was a very educational and fascinating experience for everybody.

The group ended up at the Villanueva family’s house in Queens for an impromptu dinner.  Thank you to our gracious host and to all who join the outing.  And for those who did not come, there is chance that we will do it again next summer. See you then.

Summer Hiking by the FPM Youth Team

Saturday Aug 4, 2012

Hiking (which for us in the Philippines is called mountaineering and rock climbing) at Breakneck Ridge, New York. It is north of New York City and east of Hudson River, nearest town is Cold Spring, between Peekskill and Poughkeepsie and fronting the city of Newburgh.

Fourteen friends from Filipino Pastoral Ministry answered the invitation for the Breakneck Ridge Rock Climbing:  Geraldine, Fatima Alyssa, Alyssa’s friend, Roslyn, Nancy, Sally, Liza, Maricar, Henry, Robert, Dindi, Adolfo, Reynor.  They were all inexperienced hikers (rock climbers).  They came to the Hudson Highlands expecting physical challenges, outdoor fun and adventure, yet came home with so much more: stronger friendship and lessons on resilience, hope and faith.

The trip became the talk of the town because one of them got lost in the trail for 8 hours and have to be rescued. They stayed overnight at the  Cold Springs Fire Department House because they missed  the last trip of the train to the city. They were back early morning of Sunday in good spirits and thankful for a great journey together.

An Appeal for Help for the Flood Victims from Fr. Mike Lagrimas.

Dear all,

Santa Lucia Parish is one of the worst hit by this flood. I'm sure you saw on TV our situation. There are 150 families evacuated in the barangay hall, 300 families in the elementary school, and 80 families in the church. The church has been transformed into a refugee center with more than 300 people all over. As of this time, this is the 3rd day they are there. Add to this the power outage. At night we are in total darkness.

At this time, there are relief goods coming from different agencies and private donors. The evacuees have enough food supply. What I am concerned is afterwards when they go back to their homes, or what was left of their homes. They need to rebuild their lives and start all over again. That is when they truly need our assistance, when relief goods stop coming.

Whatever aid you can extend to my parishioners is truly needed - canned goods, rice, emergency supplies and medicine, blankets and construction materials to rebuild their homes. You may send financial aid, and we will just do the purchasing of these goods. And of course, we need your prayers and spiritual support so that our people will have enough strength to endure these trials.
Thanks you very much. God bless us all!

Hi All,

Something happened on Sunday that we are thankful for. Even the heavens celebrated the big event for Mama Mary. The weather forecast was a chance of rain but instead there was a nice and beautiful afternoon with a bonus of the "Dancing Sun". The Dancing Sun was witnessed by some of the lucky ones who attended the 22nd Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan sa village after the procession.

For those who missed the heavenly happenings - Maricar Tangonan related her personal accounts of what she saw.

Salamat po sa inyong patuloy na pagtangkilik sa mga programa ng Filipino Pastoral Ministry.

Halloween: The Real Story!

Father Augustine Thompson, O.P.,

We’ve all heard the allegations. Halloween is a pagan rite dating back to some pre-Christian festival among the Celtic Druids that escaped Church suppression. Even today modern pagans and witches continue to celebrate this ancient festival. If you let your kids go trick-or-treating, they will be worshiping the devil and pagan gods.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The origins of Halloween are, in fact, very Christian and rather American. Halloween falls on October 31 because of a pope, and its observances are the result of medieval Catholic piety.

It’s true that the ancient Celts of Ireland and Britain celebrated a minor festival on Oct. 31 — as they did on the last day of most other months of the year. However, Halloween falls on the last day of October because the Feast of All Saints or "All Hallows" falls on Nov. 1. The feast in honor of all the saints in heaven used to be celebrated on May 13, but Pope Gregory III (d. 741) moved it to Nov. 1, the dedication day of All Saints Chapel in St. Peter’s at Rome . Later, in the 840s, Pope Gregory IV commanded that All Saints be observed everywhere. And so the holy day spread to Ireland . The day before was the feast’s evening vigil, "All Hallows Even" or "Hallowe’en." In those days, Halloween didn’t have any special significance for Christians or for long-dead Celtic pagans.

In 998, St. Odilo, the abbot of the powerful monastery of Cluny in Southern France, added a celebration on Nov. 2. This was a day of prayer for the souls of all the faithful departed. This feast, called All Souls Day, spread from France to the rest of Europe.

So now the Church had feasts for all those in heaven and all those in purgatory? What about those in the other place? It seems Irish Catholic peasants wondered about the unfortunate souls in hell. After all, if the souls in hell are left out when we celebrate those in heaven and purgatory, they might be unhappy enough to cause trouble. So it became customary to bang pots and pans on All Hallows Even to let the damned know they were not forgotten. Thus, in Ireland, at least, all the dead came to be remembered — even if the clergy were not terribly sympathetic to Halloween and never allowed All Damned Day into the Church calendar.

But that still isn’t our celebration of Halloween. Our traditions on this holiday centers around dressing up in fanciful costumes, which isn’t Irish at all. Rather, this custom arose in France during the 14th and 15th centuries. Late medieval Europe was hit by repeated outbreaks of the bubonic plague — the Black Death — and she lost about half her population. It is not surprising that Catholics became more concerned about the afterlife. More Masses were said on All Souls’ Day, and artistic representations were devised to remind everyone of their own mortality.

We know these representations as the "Dance Macabre" or "Dance of Death," which was commonly painted on the walls of cemeteries and shows the devil leading a daisy chain of people — popes, kings, ladies, knights, monks, peasants, lepers, etc. — into the tomb. Sometimes the dance was presented on All Souls’ Day itself as a living tableau with people dressed up in the garb of various states of life. But the French dressed up on All Souls, not Halloween; and the Irish, who had Halloween, did not dress up. How the two became mingled probably happened first in the British colonies of North America during the 1700s when Irish and French Catholics began to intermarry. The Irish focus on hell gave the French masquerades and even more macabre twist.

But, as every young ghoul knows, dressing up isn’t the point; the point is getting as many goodies as possible. Where on earth did "trick or treat" come in?

"Trick or treat" is perhaps the oddest and most American addition to Halloween, and is the unwilling contribution of English Catholics.

During the penal period of the 1500s to the 1700s in England, Catholics had no legal rights. They could not hold office and were subject to fines, jail and heavy taxes. It was a capital offense to say Mass, and hundreds of priests were martyred.

Occasionally, English Catholics resisted, sometimes foolishly. One of the most foolish acts of resistance was a plot to blow up the Protestant King James I and his Parliament with gunpowder. This was supposed to trigger a Catholic uprising against their oppressors. The ill-conceived Gunpowder Plot was foiled on Nov. 5, 1605, when the man guarding the gunpowder, a reckless convert named Guy Fawkes, was captured and arrested. He was hanged; the plot fizzled.

Nov. 5, Guy Fawkes’ Day, became a great celebration in England, and so it remains. During the penal periods, bands of revelers would put on masks and visit local Catholics in the dead of night, demanding beer and cakes for their celebration: trick or treat!

Guy Fawkes’ Day arrived in the American colonies with the first English settlers. But, buy the time of the American Revolution, old King James and Guy Fawkes had pretty much been forgotten. Trick or treat, though, was too much fun to give up, so eventually it moved to Oct. 31, the day of the Irish-French masquerade. And in America, trick or treat wasn’t limited to Catholics.

The mixture of various immigrant traditions we know as Halloween had become a fixture in the Unites States by the early 1800s. To this day, it remains unknown in Europe, even in the countries from which some of the customs originated.

But what about witches? Well, they are one of the last additions. The greeting card industry added them in the late 1800s. Halloween was already "ghoulish," so why not give witches a place on greeting cards? The Halloween card failed (although it has seen a recent resurgence in popularity), but the witches stayed. So, too, in the late 1800s, ill-informed folklorists introduced the jack-o’-lantern. They thought that Halloween was druidic and pagan in origin. Lamps made from turnips (not pumpkins) had been part of ancient Celtic harvest festivals, so they were translated to the American Halloween celebration.

The next time someone claims that Halloween is a cruel trick to lure your children into devil worship, I suggest you tell them the real origin of All Hallows Even and invite them to discover its Christian significance, along with the two greater and more important Catholic festivals that follow it.
