Happy New Year to All!
We welcome the new year with optimism, we hope and pray for a better year for all of us, for our country and throughout the world.
The Filipino Pastoral Ministry of Our Lady of Pompei started the New Year with the celebration giving honor and praise to Poong Hesus Nazareno. Poon Hesus Nazareno is a popular devotion in the Philippines that was launched in New York on January 9, 2000. We were not certain if the devotion will be successful then but the attendance during the launching proved that you can count on the Filipino’s support. We are grateful to the late Fr. Bobby Sison, who initiated the devotion who strongly believed that wherever we Filipinos are, we carry our devotion with us always. The success of the Poon Hesus Nazareno devotion at Pompei and now with the extension at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Scalabrini Center in Jamaica, has proven him right. Ten years later, the outpouring of devotion and support from the devotees of the Poon Hesus Nazareno was very inspiring.
We had a great a celebration of the POON HESUS NAZARENO SA VILLAGE FIESTA on January 03, 2010 at Our Lady of Pompei Church in New York. We are grateful to all friends and devotees who braved the bitterly cold weather to attend the fiesta celebration. Some of the highlights were
Investiture of the Poon Hesus Nazareno Medals and the Blessing of the Hermano and Hermano Mayores.
To commemorate the 10th year anniversary of the Poon Hesus Nazareno sa village devotion, all the Hermano and Hermana Mayores from 2000 to 2010 received the Poon Hesus Nazareno medal as a symbol of their responsibility and commitment to help in the propagation of the Poon Hesus Nazareno in New York. The medals were blessed by Msgr. Romy Montero, the Director of the Filipino Pastoral Minstry. The Hermano and Hermana Mayores received the blessing from all the concelebrating priests and then the medals were invested to each one of them. The Hermana and Hermano Mayores who were present: Araceli Medrano – 2000, Hermie Valles – 2003, Viring Sevilla – 2004, MaryAnn & Ricardo Melendez – 2004, Freddie & Tess Salvador – 2005, Ed Pascual – 2006, Bono & Zeny Papa – 2007, Nelia & Bobby Villanueva - 2008 (Bobby was represented by Justin Villanueva) , Jun & Amelia Makinano – 2009 and Hilarion Medrano – 2010. Belen Tatad - 2001 and Mila Leonardo – 2002 were not able to attend.
The Poon Hesus Nazareno medals were donated by the Medrano family Cely Medrano Hermana Mayor 2000 and this year’s Hermano Mayor Henry Medrano as a token of appreciation for the continued support and dedication by all the Hermano and Hermana Mayores through the years to the Poon Hesus Nazareno sa village.
Transfer of the Image
The traditional transfer ceremony of the hermandad of the Poon Hesus Nazareno following the investiture was officiated by Msgr. Romy Montero. The outgoing 2009 hermano and hermana mayores, Jun and Amelia Makinano handed over the image to the 2010 Hermano Mayores Hilarion Medrano and family Romy and Daisy Garcia. With the transfer of the image, means the turnover of the responsibility to keep and take care of the image during their term as Hermano Mayor.
The Procession
After the transfer ceremony, the bearers carried the big image of the Poon Hesus Nazareno in a carosa decked with red and white carnation in the procession. The devotees and the Hermano and Hermana Mayores joined the procession led the FPM ushers. The Filipino Pastoral Ministry Pompei Choir sang the “Nazarenong Mahal” throughout the procession.

After the homily, Fr. Mike Lagrimas presented the officers to Msgr. Romy Montero, FPM Director and to the community. The new officers have gone through formation program and have expressed commitment to implement the Pastoral Program and to pursue the vision of the FPM as a community of disciples ministering to Filipinos as a welcoming church in New York.
